These relationships allowed them to dominate the fur trade for decades and build up a fortune for Marie Bourgeois married Rene Auguste Chouteau around 1749 in New Orleans. After the birth of son Auguste, Rene returned to his native France, abandoning his North American family. Marie a few years later began cohabiting with Pierre de Laclede Liguest (known as Laclede); together they had three children.
